How to use the SITES Data

The SITES Data Portal provides monitoring data from all nine participating research stations covering a variety of themes, i.e. aquatic, atmospheric, terrestrial and biological data. Data types include remote sensing data, high-frequency measurements of physical variables as well as chemical measurements in aquatic and terrestrial systems and species observational data. Data can be visualized and downloaded free of charge as long as the infrastructure is acknowledged, see more information on the How to acknowledge SITES data page.

SITES Data Portal contains quality-controlled data available for download. New datasets are continuously being uploaded.

Create a data user account

No account is necessary to explore and download data from the SITES Data Portal.

An account allows you to permanently accept the data license, so you don't have to do it every time you download a dataset. It also gives you the possibility to download data using the data cart, where you can select several datasets, add them to your cart, and download all of them at once.

Go to this page to create or login to your account.

Data search

Data can be explored and selected by using various filter options provided on the left side of the data catalogue divided into different categories, i.e. data origin, data types, measurements, dates. Additionally, for advanced users a SPARQL endpoint can be used to explore and preselect data sets: SITES SPARQL CLIENT

Metadata landing page

Data objects are assigned metadata landing pages. Metadata landing pages can be accessed by clicking any data object from the data catalogue list. The pages included crucial metadata elements describing the data set, i.e. its origin, citation, description for the data type, variables included, technical information, etc. Polygon location and exact sampling point location are presented on a Leaflet map and are part of the landing page.

Persistent identifier (PID)

Every data set provided on the data catalogue is equipped with a persistent identifier which is included in the metadata and part of the URL link for individual metadata landing pages. This allows re-findability and reusability of the individual data sets as well as citation.

Visualization tool

Data can be visualized by using the preview tab on the metadata landing page of the individual data set. Individual parameters can be selected for preview by using the drop down menu.

Versioning

The SITES Data Portal uses versioning of data sets whenever a data set is updated. Only the latest version of a data set is presented in the data catalogue, but older versions can be accessed by clicking the ‘view previous version’ link on the metadata landing page. Older data set versions are equipped with a ‘Object is deprecated’ banner which points to the latest version of a data set.

Download

Data can be downloaded by either adding a list of data sets to a cart or by directly downloading an individual data set using the two different links provided on the top right corner of the metadata landing page. Before downloading the data license has to be approved by checking the box for the guidelines of data usage.

Data contact

Questions about the SITES Data Portal, the data use and data acknowledgement can be addressed to the SITES data contact: data@fieldsites.se.
