Nordic Big Data Limnology Network Workshop at Erken

14 October 2026

The Nordic Big Data Limnology Network (BigLimNet), a Nordic Early-Career Researcher network funded by NordForsk with the aim to foster networking and collaborations around understanding of environmental mechanisms in Nordic inland waters, held its kick-off meeting last week at SITES Erken. The BigLimNet is chaired by members from Denmark (Aarhus University), Sweden (Uppsala University) and Finland (University of Helsinki) and is open to participants within the Nordic countries.

Over twenty participants joined the kick-off meeting, which brought the group together over 2 and half days. During the meeting participants got to know each other and started to explore connections and ideas across limnology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and ecology. The group took a tour of Erken’s lake monitoring program, which offered an opportunity to not only learn about the historical data collection, but also offered practical techniques for in situ sensor set ups. SITES had a presentation during the meeting, to introduce the group to the extensive open data collection as well as the opportunity for field access at the stations.

Now with the momentum from this kick-off meeting, the group will continue to discuss plans for joint research ideas as well as a summer school in 2028 (stay tuned!).
