Bolmen Research Station continues to expand it efforts as part of the SITES Water program, most recently by acquiring an automatic lake profiler. Information on the arrival and testing of the automatic profile system (in Swedish) - below follows an adapted English translation.
The automatic profiler has now arrived at Tiraholm and the Bolmen Research Station. In mid-September it was assembled and tested before being installed in a deep basin of Bolmen.
Once in place, the profiler will continuously collect data from the water surface to the bottom during the fall – every hour, 24/7, seven days a week. Among other things, it will measure pH, water temperature, oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, Fluorescent Dissolved Organic Matter (fDOM) and chlorophyll a. It will also collect weather data above the lake, including air temperature, wind and solar radiation.
The initiative is part of Sydvattens R&D strategic work to develop and expand environmental monitoring within Lake Bolmen. It also connects to the SITES Water Thematic Program, Layer 3, where physical variables, including meteorological measurements on the lake and temperature profiles within the lake are measured at all SITES Water lakes.
Through continuous measurements, there will be better opportunities to monitor changes in the lake and increase knowledge about Bolmen's aquatic environment. Further, comparisons can be made with Lake Erken, where a similar profiler system has been and will continue to run in the future. If you are interested in what the data from the automatic profiler at Bolmen will look like, you can see Erken’s Sonde profiling data as an example. Stay tuned for data from Bolmen's automatic profiler!
