Additional Lake GHG data on the SITES Data Poral - surface and bottom water CH4 and DIC

04 May 2026

To complement the already openly available collection of lake methane (CH4) flux and CH4 and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) spatial surface water concentrations during the ice-free period, a new data set focusing on surface and bottom water CH4 and DIC concentration year-round has been uploaded to the SITES Data Portal. The new data collection, SITES Water – Lake CH4 and DIC Concentration Profile, includes CH₄ and DIC concentration profiles (i.e. epilimnion and hypolimnion at the central lake location) from five SITES lakes, measured bi-weekly during the ice-free season and monthly under ice cover. Data collection started as early as 2016 and continues as part of the SITES Water program. See the SITES Water – Lake CH4 and DIC Concentration Profile - Documentation on field sampling, analysis and data access for details. Further, the CH4 and DIC concentration profiles are collected alongside water chemistry sampling (data available separately under data type: chemical variables — lake), allowing researchers to investigate in lake biogeochemical cycling among other processes.

We welcome you to explore and download the dataset from the SITES Data Portal as well as use the data in your research! Please be sure to acknowledge the use of the data, e.g. “This [study/report/etc.] uses the SITES Water [Lake CH4 and DIC Concentration Profile Data Collection], which has been made possible by the Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science (SITES)."
